{"id":3469,"date":"2018-10-16T09:56:52","date_gmt":"2018-10-16T07:56:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tenutaifauri.it\/meet-abruzzos-indigenous-italian-grapes\/"},"modified":"2018-10-16T10:48:23","modified_gmt":"2018-10-16T08:48:23","slug":"meet-abruzzos-indigenous-italian-grapes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tenutaifauri.it\/en\/meet-abruzzos-indigenous-italian-grapes\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet Abruzzo\u2019s Indigenous Italian Grapes"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #6c7e8f;\">Abruzzo&#8217;s winemaking traditions go back hundreds of years, and producers are now showing just how great the native grapes Montepulciano and Trebbiano can be<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A two-hour drive east from Rome, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winemag.com\/region\/abruzzo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Abruzzo<\/a> is an unspoiled gem of natural beauty. The land is defined by the Apennine Mountains, particularly the Majella and Gran Sasso massifs, in the west, which pose a grand backdrop to the gently rolling hills that cascade into the Adriatic Sea to the east.<\/p>\n<p>The region is home to three national parks and numerous reserves full of old-wood forests that preserve ecological diversity. It also has a provincial side, where small farms grow tomatoes, olives, heritage grains and figs.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond these appeals, however, are bottled beauties that, for the most part, have yet to be discovered abroad. Abruzzo\u2019s winemaking traditions date back centuries, and quality has improved significantly over the last few decades.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winemag.com\/varietals\/montepulciano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montepulciano<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winemag.com\/varietals\/trebbiano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trebbiano<\/a> are the star grapes here, while long-lost varieties are also in the midst of a resurgence. There\u2019s plenty to discover from this majestic region, and there\u2019s no better time to explore.<\/p>\n<p>(&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cerasuolo d\u2019Abruzzo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Montepulciano is by no means a one-trick pony. Beyond the ability to produce a range of stylized reds, it\u2019s also the star grape for the cherry-red rosatos of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winemag.com\/region\/cerasuolo-dabruzzo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cerasuolo d\u2019Abruzzo<\/a>. Established as a DOC in 2010, this was among the first Italian denominations to champion the style, and it\u2019s long been considered one of the country\u2019s top appellations for rosato.<\/p>\n<p>Bold and structured, yet immensely refreshing, the wines drink more like light-bodied reds. As the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winemag.com\/varietals\/rose\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ros\u00e9<\/a> craze shows no signs of slowing, Cerasuolo d\u2019Abruzzo is coming into the light for American consumers that are beginning to explore the darker side of the category.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that there\u2019s still a strong market for pale pink ros\u00e9, but people are definitely experimenting more across all types of wine,\u201d says Joe Campanale, owner and beverage director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faustobrooklyn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fausto<\/a> in Brooklyn, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winemag.com\/region\/new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Campanale is also the founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annonawine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Annona<\/a>, which produces a Cerasuolo d\u2019Abruzzo from Loreto Aprutino in the central province of Pescara. The wine benefits from the vineyards\u2019 prime location between the cooling slopes of Gran Sasso and the gentle coastal breeze of the Adriatic.<\/p>\n<p>The color of Cerasuolo d\u2019Abruzzo is the wine\u2019s defining element. With a vibrant cherry-red hue, it may seem like the skins must be in contact with the juice for an extended time. But that\u2019s not the case.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe anthocyanin [pigment] potential is very high in Montepulciano.\u201d says Valentina Di Camillo, who, with her brother, Luigi, makes the wine for <a href=\"https:\/\/tenutaifauri.it\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tenuta I Fauri<\/a>. \u201cThis fact can easily explain the reason why the result of a short maceration is the naturally rich color.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The grape\u2019s inherent structure makes it a strong contender to produce robust, ageworthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winemag.com\/varietals\/rosato\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rosatos<\/a>. The best examples offer plenty of juicy red fruit up front, with a delicate grip of tannins and a tangy, mineral-laden finish. They\u2019re versatile offerings that can be enjoyed beyond the year mark. According to Campanale, his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annonawine.com\/wines-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2015 Cerasuolo d\u2019Abruzzo<\/a> is currently drinking wonderfully.<\/p>\n<p>(&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winemag.com\/buying-guide\/tenuta-i-fauri-2017-baldovino-cerasuolo-dabruzzo-297113\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tenuta I Fauri 2017 Baldovino (Cerasuolo d\u2019Abruzzo); $14, 90 points<\/strong><\/a>. Broad tones of Bing cherry and wild strawberry carry an undercurrent of lemongrass on the nose. This is rounded and structured on the palate, boasting thick-skinned red-berry flavors that turn taut and grippy toward the white-pepper and cherry-skin finish.
